Months to break even...
Net savings over the horizon...
Spa visits replaced over the horizon...

Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

The most common justification for a five-figure massage chair is that it replaces a standing appointment with a massage therapist. Whether that holds up depends entirely on what you spend today: the price of each visit, the tip, the cost of getting there, and how many visits a month the chair would actually replace. Some households recover the price of the chair in under two years; others, who visit a therapist only occasionally, never do.

This calculator takes your current spend per visit, including tip and travel, multiplies it by the number of visits a month the chair would replace, and divides the chair price by that monthly figure to find the break-even point. It then shows the net position over the horizon you choose. The result is an arithmetic comparison, not a claim that a chair and a therapist deliver the same experience. That judgment is yours to make.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the all-in price of the chair you are considering, including delivery and any warranty.
  2. Enter what one professional massage costs you today, the tip you usually leave, your travel cost, and how many visits a month the chair would replace across the household.
  3. Read the months to break even, then adjust the horizon to see the net position at three, five or ten years.

What the math assumes

  • Cost per visit equals the session price plus tip as a percentage of that price, plus your travel cost. Monthly spend equals cost per visit times visits per month.
  • Months to break even equal the chair price divided by the monthly spend replaced. If the monthly spend is 0, break-even is shown as 0 because the chair never pays for itself on cost alone.
  • Net savings over the horizon equal monthly spend times months in the horizon, minus the chair price. A negative figure means the chair costs more than the visits it replaces over that period.
  • Spa prices and your usage are assumed to stay flat for the whole horizon. No inflation, membership discounts or price rises are modeled.
  • Chair upkeep, electricity and resale value are not included here. Use the Massage Chair Cost Per Session Calculator on this site for a fuller ownership cost.

Frequently asked questions

Is a massage chair really a substitute for a licensed massage therapist?

Not entirely. A therapist adapts to you in real time and can work on specific problems in ways a chair cannot. The calculator only compares the money, so enter the number of visits you would honestly give up rather than every visit you currently make.

Why does the break-even figure jump when I change visits per month?

Break-even is the chair price divided by the monthly spend it replaces, so halving the visits doubles the months. A chair that pays for itself in 20 months at four visits a month takes 80 months at one visit a month.

Should I count visits by other members of my household?

Yes, if they will use the chair instead of booking their own appointments. A shared chair spreads the fixed cost across more sessions, which is usually the strongest case for buying one.

What if I would keep some spa visits even after buying a chair?

Enter only the visits you would drop. Many owners keep an occasional therapist appointment and use the chair for daily maintenance, which lowers the monthly figure and lengthens the break-even period.
